President-elect Barack Obama made the stock markets leap for joy Friday afternoon. They were desperate for good news and they found it in the rumor that New York Federal Reserve Chairman Timothy G. Geithner is the likely choice for Treasury secretary. The Dow Jones index erupted skyward 494 points in late trading.
